E luce fu

 Marcel Proust

These day's it's just a lot of talk about the Higgs Boson, but I'm sure that all of you have difficulty in making any sense of it as I do. But there are some things, connected to the Higgs Boson as a letter of the alphabet is to the Recherce by Proust, that we can all understand and that are really fascinating. However, we all know what are the electrons (particles charged - that revolve around a nucleus charged +), well, in the atoms of antimatter, on the contrary, we find + charged particles, positrons, which revolve around a nucleus charged -. Antimatter exists, just not as stable as the matter, and we can isolate it for a short time (although last year was trapped for 16 minutes, a time long enough to allow more deep studying).
What happens when an electron collides with a positron? We produce two photons, ie light. Knowing this, the words of the Bible "and there was light" take on a whole new meaning, eh? Infact, matter and antimatter are really important for understanding the Big Bang that was the origin of the universe. The anomaly of the origin of the universe is that matter and antimatter should have been in equal proportion, and this would result in the total annihilation of the newly formed universe, and instead, was not only light, for some strange reason, the matter prevailed over antimatter and the rest is history.
Do not think, however, that antimatter is something out of our every day lives, because diagnostic equipment such as PET (Positron Emission Tomography) uses emission of positrons, and for advanced studies of early breast cancer diagnosis, as the one carried out in Trieste (Italy), synchrotron radiation are used. Sicrotrone radiation are produced by collisions of electrons and positrons to obtain also monochromatic x-rays capable of detecting very small tumors that can not be found with any other method.
